You can Make a BIG Difference in the Life of a Child
Imagine a future with young people saying 'no' to alcohol and drugs, attending school on a regular basis and getting along better with their families and peers - it happens everyday . . . all because they had Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Did you know:
- One out of every two children will live in a single-parent family at some point during childhood.
- Ninety-eight percent of the Little Brothers and Little Sisters participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs come from single-parent homes.
Unfortunately, these children are at a greater risk of:
- low school performance
- teenage pregnancy
- drug, alcohol, and tobacco use
- criminal behavior
- poverty and
- social, behavioral, and emotional problems
But there is hope - in the form of a caring adult who volunteers their time to be a Big Brother or Big Sister.
There are over 800 children and youth on our waiting list to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. It costs $1,250 to provide a quality mentoring relationship for one child for one year - to recruit a volunteer, screen and match the volunteer to a child on our waiting list, and provide support services for the volunteer, child and family.
Through participation in a variety of fundraising opportunities, loyal friends and generous contributors make a positive difference in the lives of at-risk children annually.
Special events such as Bowl for Kids' Sake, The Hatfields' "Take the Reins for Kids" at Scioto Downs, and A Taste of Class for Kids as well as corporate donations, grants, individual contributions, and planned giving are the foundation of our success.
